Major Ed Folds of Honor Health/Face Masks: UPDATE
Since posting that we have the Major Ed Folds of Honor Face/Health Masks available, we received a few questions. We’ve gone back to the company for answers and here is what we learned:
Q: Where were the FOH Health Masks designed?
A: Designed in the US
Q: Where are the face masks made?
A: At our manufacturer in China. We have been working with them for over 10 years and are confident in their work.
Q: What is the thinking behind having a Charcoal filter?
A: Each mask includes an insert-able Filter called a PM 2.5. This filter is specially produced to fit in the pocket of your Mask and is made with 5-Layers of protective sheets; Activated Carbon Filter layered with 2 Non-Woven Melt-Blown fibers which are surrounded by 2 sheets of moisture resistant fabric. This PM 2.5 filter removes particulate matter down to 2.5 microns. These are particles commonly found in exhaust fumes, emissions from factory work, dust, water vapors, pollen, mold spores, pet allergens and more. These filters are not medical grade and do not ensure any protection against viruses.
Q: How often do the filters need to be changed?
A: The Mask is a reusable mask and each replaceable filter can be used up to 60 hours. The length of time before replacing the mask depends on how polluted the environment is when you use it. The mask will need replacing after extended use to ensure proper filtration.
These questions were asked and we sent the answers out to a few individuals. Alexander Alex, Director of the Veteran Health Program at Lehigh Valley Hospital Network wrote us back and here is his response about these masks:
Good to know the mask will filter larger particles , but it won’t filter a virus. From my research on this subject I found the micron rating for the Covid-19 and other similar viruses are rated at 0.125 microns (you would need an electron microscope at 10,000x to detect a 1.0 micron particle). Ambient water droplets that the virus travels in when people cough, talk, or simply breathing are at 1.0 – 3.0 micron. In comparison to give you an idea, a HEPA filter like those in an air purifier, HVAC system could filter a 1.0 micron particle.
The mask provides an environmental benefit while potentially keeping out some ambient water droplets, which the CDC is concerned about for the general public. It’s important that the wearer covers both nose and mouth to make the protection effective.
Very cool mask.
